Andrew L. Sandler Interviewed by Public Justice for Trial Lawyer of the Year Award

Andrew L. Sandler was interviewed by Public Justice for their Trial Lawyer of the Year Award, for which the firm’s Navajo Nation v. U.S. team was one of five finalists.

The trial team fought on behalf of the Navajo Nation for more than two years after the firm was retained following unsuccessful efforts to settle the case. The suit involved claims of mismanagement of tribal trust funds and resources under the custody and control of the United States over a period of decades, during which the United States failed to supervise, control, manage, and invest the funds and resources in a manner that would maximize financial return and failed to maintain a complete and accurate accounting of all of the Navajo Nation’s trust assets.

In August 2014, following a successful dual mediation and litigation strategy, the firm achieved for the Navajo Nation the largest settlement ($554 million) obtained in any action by a single Tribe against the U.S. The settlement was described as a “landmark resolution” by then-Attorney General Eric Holder, and exceeded, by more than $170 million, the largest single resolution in the more than 100 natural resource breach of trust cases filed against the U.S. by American Indian Tribes.
