Henry Asbill

Hank Asbill was profiled on April 24, 2018 in a Law360 article, “Buckley Sandler picks up white collar atty from Jones Day,” which discussed Hank Asbill’s move to Buckley: “I think that some of the best trial lawyers I know reside at Buckley Sandler, and that’s the kind of work I do and want to continue to do. So it seemed to me a logical place to think about coming.”  He also noted that he knew in law school that he wanted to be a criminal defense lawyer -- “I think that somebody has got to stand up to the government, make sure that when they bring their resources to bear on individuals or corporations that they do so fairly and they do so accurately.”

The article also highlighted some of his previous work, particularly his representation of former Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell before the U.S. Supreme Court – “Asbill secured a rare high court reversal when Supreme Court justices found in 2016 that the government’s interpretation of an ‘official act’ was too broad, opting instead to narrow the definition for future public corruption cases. As Asbill noted: “We fought from before the case was indicted all the way through to the Supreme Court and we ultimately prevailed. I was delighted for the client, I was delighted for the team that worked on the case, I was delighted basically for criminal defense lawyers and for the rule of law, which I think we helped ensure prevailed.”
