Biography

Amanda Lawrence has successfully represented financial institutions in matters involving federal and state enforcement agency investigations and litigation, private civil and class actions, regulatory examinations, and corporate internal investigations. As a Partner in the Washington, D.C., office of Buckley Sandler LLP, her work focuses on civil and complex litigation and assisting clients in matters before the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), federal and state bank regulators, and state attorneys general.

Her work includes cases involving unfair, deceptive, and abusive acts and practices (UDAAP), securities fraud, the Fair Housing Act (FHA), the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA), the Civil Rights Act, and unfair and deceptive trade practices statutes. In addition, Ms. Lawrence counsels clients on risk management strategies and compliance with various federal and state laws and regulations affecting the financial services industry.

Ms. Lawrence’s recent representations include:

  • Representing a large bank in one of the CFPB’s first enforcement actions, a joint investigation and enforcement action with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), alleging deceptive sales practices in connection with add-on products
     
  • Several CFPB examinations and investigations, including examinations and investigations related to add-on products, student loan servicing, and lending for non-bank institutions
     
  • Defending correspondent lenders in lawsuits brought by a liquidating trust of a bankrupt securitizer alleging breach of contract and indemnification based on purported defects in mortgage loans
     
  • Reviewing and assessing loan repurchase demands on behalf of mortgage originators, performing risk assessments of loan portfolios, and handling loan-repurchase litigation
     
  • Conducting risk assessments of major mortgage servicers’ practices pursuant to FDIC and Federal Reserve Consent Orders, as well as fair lending and UDAAP risk assessments for large financial institutions regarding non-mortgage products
     
  • Defending a lender placed insurance provider in multiple putative class actions

Ms. Lawrence is a member of the firm’s Pro Bono Committee and has an active pro bono practice. She is a member of Law360’s Banking Editorial Advisory Board, was recently named a Fellow in the Litigation Counsel of America Trial Lawyer Honorary Society, and is the former Chair of the Women Litigator’s Committee of the D.C. Bar. Prior to joining Buckley Sandler, Ms. Lawrence was an Associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LLP. She received her J.D. from Case Western Reserve University and her B.A. from Rhodes College.
