Biography

James T. Shreve is a trusted advisor to companies addressing complex issues involving privacy, data security, and cyber risk issues. Based in the Chicago office of Buckley Sandler LLP as Counsel, he is a thought leader in cybersecurity and privacy law, and is adept at navigating pressing business concerns and applying the law to new, evolving technology.

His practice focuses on the myriad concerns surrounding confidential information and the systems where such information is stored and transmitted. Mr. Shreve’s experience includes advising clients regarding addressing cyber and information security incidents, information sharing limitations, safeguarding and disposal requirements, privacy notices, privacy and data security policies, identity theft red flags programs, and privacy and data security provisions in contracts.

Representative matters include:

  • Advising new and expanding fintech companies regarding the application of privacy and security to new technologies and business models as well as related financial services requirements, such as payments standards, anti-money laundering compliance, and licensing
     
  • Assisting clients in handling hundreds of data security incidents, including interactions with federal and state agencies, oversight of forensic investigations, consumer notifications, and remedial steps after incidents
     
  • Advising clients in responding to regulatory inquiries, investigations, and enforcement actions relating to privacy, information security, or cybersecurity issues
     
  • Working with non-banks, such as Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)-regulated entities, mortgage lenders or servicers, or service providers to financial institutions in meeting bank-level security expectations of regulators or business partners

Mr. Shreve is a prolific speaker, presenting on topics ranging from addressing security breaches to mobile payments systems and vendor oversight to drone privacy. In the past several years, he has spoken before numerous industry organizations and associations, including but not limited to the RSA Conference, the International Association of Privacy Professionals, the Information Systems Security Association, the American Conference Institute, the American Bar Association, and the Mortgage Bankers Association. He also serves on the Training Advisory Board of the International Association of Privacy Professionals, is designated as a Fellow of Information Privacy, and holds CIPP/US and CIPT certifications from that organization. He was listed as an Associate to Watch in Chambers USA 2015 and Chambers Global 2016 in the area of Privacy and Data Security. In 2017, Legal 500 recognized him in the area of Cyber Law (Data Protection and Privacy) and named him as a Next Generation Lawyer in the field.

Prior to joining Buckley Sandler, Mr. Shreve was an attorney in the Privacy & Data Security and Financial Services groups at Goodwin Procter, and prior to that WilmerHale, where he advised major financial institutions and other clients on a range of privacy and regulatory compliance issues.

Mr. Shreve received his J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and his B.A. from Lake Forest College. During law school, he clerked for the Honorable Robert J. Cindrich in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
